AntiVir is a free software program which offers protection from viruses on your computer. You can download the personal use version free, but will need to pay for business and networking versions. Avira has released several versions of AntiVir, all of which offer protection from viruses attacking your computer from files you download, or web pages you view.
Once you download AntiVir, it will work in the background constantly scanning your computer for malicious programs such as viruses, Trojans, hoaxes, backdoor programs, worms, and diallers. Each of these programs can cause damage to your computer, or could enable a computer hacker to use your computer, gather your passwords, or to create havoc for you the computer user.
Without any antivirus protection at all, you run the risk of inadvertently downloading these malicious programs without even knowing you have, until problems arise. AntiVir monitors every action executed by the user and the computer operating system and reacts quickly when it detects malicious programs to quarantine, isolate, disable, and stop viruses, Trojans, and other problem programs immediately from accessing your private information on your computer, or from dialling out on your internet account.
AntiVir does require 20 MB of free RAM (Random Access Memory) to run efficiently. However, every type of virus protection program uses some RAM to work. If you use Windows Vista, you can integrate AntiVir into the User Account Control, allowing you to carry out tasks requiring administrator rights while still having protection. This feature is not available for other operating systems.
Users of AntiVir have access to detailed information on the detected viruses and malware (malicious programs) and an on access scan for continual monitoring of all file access attempts. High detection rates of virus and malware makes AntiVir stand out compared to other free anti virus programs. AntiVir can also read multiple files at once, allowing you the freedom to work with many files or programs.
Downloading older versions of AntiVir is sufficient to protect your computer, as the most recent versions have only made cha nges to the user interface or the screens you use to control the program, or registry for the AntiVir keys.
